A few months ago, I started a new job at the Toronto Star as a photo editor (leaving my old post as online editor at Metro). I now work four days a week, leaving me with lots of time to putter around the house, eat bonbons, watch Oprah and paint my toenails. Also, I no longer work with words — unless you count editing photographers’ awkwardly written cutlines in that category, which I don’t. (Hey, remember when I said I was going to write one blog post a week after my feminist column ended? Yeah, no.) It all left me with something to be desired, which got me to actually start reading again, not just fitfully buying stacks of books and staring guiltily at the uncracked spines on my shelf.
Thus, my new project: read one book per week. Enter Project 52 Titles.
Since Jan. 1, I’ve read the following:
The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Jose Saramago
The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain de Botton
The Tiger by John Vaillant
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
The plan is to reflect on and muse about what I read on this blog (posts on the above titles to come); share the best bits; learn how to be an engaged reader again. I miss that.
That, and my other pressing goal: learn how to use my new, titanium- and enamel-clad, 5-quart, cast iron Staub French oven:
